Divoshi rules

You can learn the game just by playing it online, but here are the rules in their complete form. The basic (smaller) game version can be played with chess pieces, on a reduced chess board.

The board and initial positions:

1. The game is played on a square board with 7 or 9 rows and an odd number of columns which can vary from 5 to 11. Best played on 5×7, 7×7, 7×9, 9×9.
5×7 is currently considered the best game dimension.
2. The King (or Chief) resides in the central column of the last row. There are Rider and Amazon around him, with another Rider and Amazon in the corners. On the wider board versions, there are Warriors around the King. The frontal row is occupied by Savages only.
Note: Riders and Amazons on a 7-row board are arranged so to not be opposite to their opponent’s counterparts.

Game variants

There are also game variants with different rules for the starting setup. It includes chaos setup, armageddon setup, assassination mode, and 3-or-4-player mode. Some of them imply the element of randomness, some of them present a modification of the underlying setting.


1. The players alternate their moves like in chess.
2. The player must make a move if he can. If he can’t, his move is omited.
3. The pieces can move to 8 basic directions, usually up to 2 squares far. A piece can’t jump over other pieces but it can step onto a square occupied by an opponent’s piece.

Pushing and capturing:

1. If a piece enters a square occupied by an opponent’s piece, it now becomes important whether the attacked piece is able to retreat. It can retreat if the next square in the direction of the attack is empty.
2. If the attacked piece can retreat, then it is obliged to retreat there. The retreat is processed at the same time as the attack, as a part of the attacker’s move.
3. If it can’t retreat, the piece is captured and removed from the board. (It can’t retreat if the next square in the direction of the attack is occupied by another piece, or there is an edge of the board).
4. Freeze and recover rule: A piece which was just pushed by the opponent (or has retreated, saying it in other words) can’t move. It must wait for the next turn to be able to move. The exception from this rule is the Warrior piece – see below.

Game goal:

Capture the Chief.

Pieces and their abilities:

1. Savage is an ordinary piece with no special abilities.
2. Warrior (which is present on the wider boards only) can break the rule 4 about pushing. Even if just been pushed/retreated, the Warrior may move, but only under condition that he was pushed by someone else than Warrrior.
3. Amazon can move up to 3 squares far.
4. Hero (or we can better call him Rider) can move as far as he wants.
5. The Chief has no special abilities, but capturing him means winning the game instantly.

Hint: The more point-shaped piece, the farther it is able to move.


Repeating the same position several times and not wanting to change the situation leads to a draw.

Multiple pushers

Players are not allowed to argue over one square by endless pushing. (Such situation may happen if there are many pieces pointing to one square.) It is allowed no more than three times in a row to push a piece out of the same square. Next time the player must move somewhere else.

    Have you seen the single-player version ? The rules are explained there in more compressed form.
    Someone also created the walkhtough on youtube (though kinda confusing one).

    The game rules are trivial in fact. I believe that anyone who is interested in board games can easily comprehend them even not reading them, just by playing one game in the single-player.
